Sharon Murdoch, born in Invercargill and of English and Ngāi Tahu descent, is a political cartoonist for The Press and resident political cartoonist for the Sunday Star Times.
The first woman in New Zealand to hold a regular political cartoon spot in a mainstream newspaper, and with only 2 per cent of political/editorial cartoonists internationally being women, Sharon is one of a rare breed. She has been a Canon Cartoonist of the Year finalist for the past 2 years, and this year was named Cartoonist of the Year in the Canon Media Awards. The judges said she finished ahead of a high-quality field thanks to her ‘fresh style and satirical intelligence. She is gleeful and ingenious, and very funny, but she can shock us too.’
Sharon’s work features in We Will Work With You: Wellington Media Collective 1978–1998 (VUP, 2013) and the forthcoming Gecko Annual (Gecko Press), and is the subject of the soon to be released Murdoch: The Political Cartoons of Sharon Murdoch with commentary by Melinda Johnston, published by Potton Burton.
Sharon Murdoch appears in:
